Castlecomer Footbridge

Description
The scheme involved the construction of a new footbridge with clear span of 44m adjacent to the existing N78 National Road Bridge in Castlecomer, County Kilkenny.
The scope of the works included:
- Works in a sensitive site - Works carried out in an SAC and site clearance required removal and disposal of Japanese Knotweed; Also works required to the existing bridge which was a protected structure.
- Ancillary works associated with road and bridge works schemes including liaison with landowners affected by the works at the structure
- Traffic management on a National Road in an urban area including night time road closure to facilitate bridge lift
- Water management and work in environmentally sensitive areas; Extensive instream works required to construct a pillar in the river. Also significant temporary works required over the river.
- Public realm works including installation of paths, pavings bollards, information signs etc
- Earthworks/excavations adjacent to a watercourse;
- Construction of in-situ reinforced concrete elements;
- Construction of steel bridge structures;
- Installation of bored piles to carry the bridge abutments. CFA piles were used for this project.
- Masonry construction; - The Masonry works were extremely sensitive as there were works to the existing bridge which is a protected structure. Continuous liaising with the TII heritage officer and Kilkenny County Council Heritage officer.
