This Contract awarded to Joe Kenny Plant Hire is the Clonmel West Drainage Scheme – Convent Road Works Contract. The Works are an addition to the completed Clonmel West Scheme and involve the construction of flood alleviation works on a number of properties on the Convent Road area of Clonmel.

The main elements of this flood prevention contract are:

  • For the construction of embankments, piling operations, flood walls and storm water drainage, the provision of fencing, cattle crush, road barriers and flood signage. In addition, the works will involve the provision of a number of flap valves to existing weep holes on quay walls along various parts of Clonmel town. The works will require the temporary diversion of a number of existing utility services to the affected properties.
  • Construction of a new embankment to protect an existing dwelling house against flooding.
  • Construction of a reinforced concrete retaining wall on top of sheet piles to protect existing dwelling house.
  • Demolition of 2 No. sheds and re-construction of 1 No. shed.
  • Raising a yard above flood levels by importing and compacting approximately 4,000m3 of 6N and 6F2.
  • Installation of 3 No. pumping stations to pump out foul and storm water from a protected enclosure during high river levels.
  • Diversion of existing services and installation of new services including ESB & Broadband.
  • Installlation of 500 metres of sheet piles to depths of up to 10 metres;
  • Construction of stone faced walls attached for the sheet piles.
  • Installation of removable barriers at entrance to Semiton offices and at the Workingmans Boat Club. These barriers are specially designed lightweight barriers that can be lifted into place by hand at entry/exit points when river levels rise.
  • Installation of approximately 250 flap valves along the existing quay wall in Clonmel to prevent ingress of water during high river levels.
We were also contracted to install 1 No. 750mm Duckbill non-return valve on the Quay wall under the river level which had caused major flooding problems during the flooding of 2009 and 2014. This required:
  • De-watering a section of the river to install the valve.
  • Landscaping and seeding of finished areas.
  • Fabrication and installation of barriers which are closed during flooding to prevent vehicles from entering flooded roads during extreme weather events.
  • Surveying of properties in vicinity of the works.
